8vo. [5], 2-14, [2] pp. Frontispiece portrait of Minkowski with tissue guard. Original tan wrappers with Minkowki's name and the title inset on the front wrapper. Clamshell case with brown linen on the boards and with brown calf, five raised bands, and gilt rules and lettering on the spine. Minkowski's name and the title in elaborate script in a cloth oval onlay to the front board of the case replicating the design on the front wrapper. Printing and the Mind of Man, 401. The first separate edition of Minkowski's classic paper in which he first described what is now referred to as Minkowski spacetime, a mathematical structure consisting of the set of all real 4-tuples and an ordering relation that determines the past and future light cones of each point in the structure. The paper was first published in Jahresbericht der Deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung (Annual Report of the German Mathematical Society) in 1909, but was printed and distibuted separately later that year as an offprint following Minkowski's death in January. An attractive example of this extraordinarily important work in mathematical physics.
