1939. First edition. 108pp. The Spanish Civil War of the 1930s was a theme which inspired many English poets, several of whom fought or took an active part in one way or another on the Government side, to write some of their most remarkable poems. This book endeavours to assemble the best of these works, and at the same time to point their significance and special character by putting them beside a selection of English translations, done by various hands, of the poems of Spanish authors on the same time. There is an introductory essay by Stephen Spender. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with yellow titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and the spine is browned. The spine ends are lightly bumped with some small tears near the top of the spine and a larger tear of about 1/2" on the top front edge. The tears have been repaired on the reverse with tape.
