Descripción:

A canonical translation of the Divine Comedy, in a delicate hand-painted binding protected by a thin, translucent layer of vellum. The technique was popularized by the workshop of Cedric Chivers in Bath. This unusual example, lacking the pen and ink elements characteristic of Chivers and not signed by his bindery, has been stamped "vellucent binding" on the first blank. Henry Francis Cary (1772-1844) published his blank verse version of Dante in 1814 at his own expense and to little public attention. A new edition, released the year of his death, became "his chief claim to fame, and it remained a standard text well into the twentieth century, despite the fact that the number of translators of the work between 1782 and 1966 amounted to eighty-four. Cary's version was admired by Wordsworth, Keats, Lamb, Coleridge, Macaulay, and Ruskin, and in 1966 the author of a work on translations of the Divina commedia wrote 'Cary's version still holds its place as a minor classic'" (ODNB). Octavo (189 x 131 mm). Portrait frontispiece with tissue guard, title page printed in red and black. Contemporary vellum over light blue and green tinted paper-covered boards, spine lettered in gilt, gilt roll to spine ends and boards enclosing blue and green water-colour foliate design, gilt roll to turn-ins with floral cornerpieces, inner hinges reinforced with silk moiré, edges gilt. Vellum a little soiled, decorations still clear, outer leaves lightly marked. A very good copy. N° de ref. del artículo 175194
