3 vols., quarto, pp vii, 460; [6], 2, 476; [4] 317*, [1]. (*The final volume is mispaginated, page numbers 201 - 208 being repeated, though with no duplication of text.) With two "retratos", one of the author, the other of Fr. Juan Maria Salvatierra, founder of the Jesuit missions in (Baja) California. [Sabin 714;Howes A112;Palau 6589; Beristain mentions the 2 vols. folio in manuscript in the archives of the Viceroy.] "Nuestro Alegre", as Beristain [vol. 1: 115] refers to him, was a native Mexican, and one of the leading lights of Mexican culture at the time of his expulsion, with his order, in 1767. Consummate linguist in European, classical, and native languages, historian, and mathematician, Alegre was a true figure of the Enlightenment, though entirely educated in Mexico, and Cuba [Pena, Hist. Literatura Mexicana: 137-138]. As one would expect from the subject matter, there are long sections on the missionizing of (Baja) California under Fr. Salvatierra and Fr. Kino's remarkable efforts in Sonora and Arizona. Bustamante, as noted in the subtitle, was promoting the readmission of the Jesuit order into Mexico, and this book was viewed by him as a good argument for the benefits that would come from such a move. This set was from the Bibliotheque Adrien Carrere (?), with several small, old and unobtrusive library stamps to that effect scattered throughout. Fine copies in later half calf, raised bands, marbled boards. N° de ref. del artículo 6250
