Añadir al carritoThree Quarter Leather. Condición: Near Fine. Alexander King Ilustrador. Original red three quarter calf. Marbled paper covered boards, paste downs and end papers. Upper corners mildly bumped. Five gilt decorated raised bands with gilt title to the panel. Stylized full page black and white illustrations. "The Greek and Roman gods and goddesses often had various epithets or aspects, reflecting different qualities associated with them, and these were on occasion the object of special worship, often at temples being dedicated to a specific epithet of the god. Each of the different epithets of a single god usually had its own distinct feast day. Thus, for example, Venus -- the goddess of sex and love -- was also worshipped under the epithets Venus Felix (Venus the bringer of good fortune), Venus Cloacina (Venus the purifier), Venus Victix (Venus the bringer of victory), or Venus Vericordia (Venus the changer of hearts). One of the lesser-known epithets of Venus was Venus Castina, the Venus who protected the yearnings of feminine souls trapped in male bodies. This epithet of Venus is mentioned by the Greek historian Herodotus of Halicarnassus in the fifth century BC. Depictions of worshipers of Venus Castina show both men and women, all dressed in women's clothes. More information can be found in any serious reference book on classical mythology." by Melissa Tawn. A very attractive book. Size: 6.5' x 9.0" Language: eng.

Añadir al carrito[LGBTQ] Bulliet, C. J. Venus Castina: Famous Female Impersonators and Celestial and Human. New York: Bonanza Books, 1956. Stated "Precise facsimile of the original Limited Edition published in 1928". Striking in-text illustrations from notable illustrator Alexander King. Octavo. 308 pages. Hardcover quarter red cloth and three-quarters black cloth. Illustrated red and black dust jacket with bold lettering. Venus Castina (Chaste Venus), is claimed to be an epithet of the Roman goddess Venus; she was associated with "the yearnings of feminine souls locked up in male bodies". Clarence Joseph Bulliet wrote his book about homosexuality and cross-dressing named after this supposed epithet. In the book, he asserts the influence of "the effeminate" to many things. The dust jacket boasts that "[Mr Bulliet's] roster of famous gentlemen who have donned female attire stretches from ancient Greece to the present day, and includes degenerate emperors and noted warriors, gentle priests and renowned men of letters, heroes and statesmen, and even a few gods and demigods". The dust jacket is missing 3" x 1.5" of text on the upper left margin. Dust jacket's spine is missing 1" from upper margin, and is lightly faded. Clean and crisp pages, this book is in very good condition overall.

Añadir al carritoMatted Prints. Condición: Near Fine. Alexander King Ilustrador. NOTE: Not the Book; Removed Images from the Book. Eleven stunning, professionally-matted black and white images by Alexander King, originally illustrating C.J. Bulliet's Venus Castina, first published as a limited edition by Covici Friede in 1928, and subsequently reprinted several times. .Bulliet, a journalist, theatrical promoter and later well-known art critic for the Chicago Daily News was an art-savvy proponent of the Modernist movement, and fascinated by the concept of one particular aspect of the Roman goddess Venus (Castina, or chaste Venus. But that single term, encountered alone, can be misleading if or it representes only the gates to the temple; just beyond the portals of this general concept of "Chastity", resides the "Sacred Virgin", the undefeated AND undefeatable sublime "Diana" aspect of Venus, powerful, one unto themselves, who embodied "the yearnings of feminine souls locked up in male bodies.Bulliet's fascinating account included a rich assortment of figures across time: 'kings and princes and heroes of old days and modern.soft-eyed dreamers of a forbidden ineffable, warriors and poets, artists, statesmen, quacks, hoodlums and harlequins.". To this prodigious and scholarly history of famous female impersonators, came Vienna-born artist Alexander King (1899-1965). "Described as a thief, morphine addict, failing playwright and painter, Alexander King was a man of "iconoclastic observations and caustic humor who began his career as a painter of human figures, focused primarily on the face. Then he became an art thief, stealing fifty prints from the Metropolitan Museum. He was jailed twice, and married four times. He wrote a book, "Rich Man, Poor Man, Freud and Fruit," and died one day after appearing on "The Today Show" to publicize it." (Wikipedia). "To you who laugh in the Theater when a Male Moron puts on a Grass Skirt and dances a burlesque Spring Song in front of a Jazz Band; To you who giggle when the handsome young Preacher pitches high his voice and mimics a hoydenish Maiden at a Picnic Chicken Dinner; To you who find delight in the Girlish Pranks our College Boys are playing on each other and on their Girl Chums; To you who applauded in the World War the efforts of our War Department to guard our Young Soldiers from Female Contamination, leaving them to Other Devices; To you have closed our Houses of Prostitution and bade Young Men forget Sexual Desire in Athletic Friendship; To you who view with Equanimity the rapid spread of the 'Scythian madness; in America since the World War To you, all and individually, is dedicated VENUS CASTINA" (Dedication Page).
