From the introduction: "The 430 letters that constitute the literary estate of Albert Einstein's first wife, Mileva Einstein- Marie (1875-1948), and her family are an unparalleled treasure trove, providing the most immediate access to the life of Albert Einstein (1879-1955). Because most of the correspondence speaks in the voice of Einstein, we are able to gain unique and invaluable glimpses into his ideas, and his views on family and the world. The letters cover the period from the beginnings of the courtship and intellectual partnership with Mileva in 1897 until her death; many others are to Einstein's two sons Hans Albert (1904-1973) and Eduard (1910-1965). After divorcing Albert in 1919, Mileva maintained her residence in Zurich, Switzerland until the end of her litfe and never remarried. Though the divorce proceedings were very bitter, a reconciliation of sorts was achieved by the late twenties, and in the last two decades of her life several hundred letters were written by Albert to Mileva and to their sons."
