Añadir al carritoFirst editions, first printings, of four scarce early surrealist works by the visionary film-maker Alejandro Jodorowsky, legendary for his attempt to film Frank Herbert's Dune and well known as a practitioner of psychomagic and the tarot. These four "Panic" publications chart the development of the Panic Movement, a surrealist collective formed by Jodorowsky in Paris in 1962, alongside Fernando Arrabal and Roland Topor, and dissolved in 1973. Named after the pagan god Pan, the movement sought to put chaotic energies at the heart of surrealist practice, and engaged in such on-stage acts as crucifying a chicken and throwing live turtles into the audience. The first three works, Cuentos panicos (1963, 1,000 copies, illustrated by Roland Topor), Teatro panico (1965, number 759 of 2,000 copies, illustrated by Jose Luis Cuevas), and Juegos pánicos (1965, limitation not stated but very scarce, illustrated by Jodorowsky), include surreal illustrations and diagrams, comic strips, and photographs from stage performances, while Fábulas Pánicas (1977, 25,000 copies, illustrated by Jodorowsky) collects Jodorowsky's bizarre comic strip originally published in El Heraldo de Mexico 1967-70. This was the first of many comic series for Jodorowsky, developing later into the full blown "Jodoverse" with The Incal and Metabarons. Four works (3 octavo, 1 quarto). Original illustrated wrappers. Cuentos panicos near-fine; Teatro panico with some darkening around spine; Juegos pánicos and Fábulas pánicas with some rubbing and creasing: generally very good.
