THE PRIMER ROMANCERO GITANO, the famed collection of 18 Gypsy ballads by Lorca; the book had an immediate success as soon as it was published, and by 1929 a second edition appeared; it is, without doubt, one of the most recognized and popular books of Hispano American literature of the 20th century. The Primer romancero gitano is related in its origin to the Poema del cante jondo from which it is taken and with which it holds clear unifying ties. The cante jondo, the Gypsy Andalucian song in its modern development, is the root for both of the books, coming together in the Romancero. It was the idea of Francisco García Lorca, Federico s brother, who commented on one occasion of bringing together all of the romances of his brother in a single volume, as is the case, under a single metric register, of the rich variety of the Lorcan style. From this idea this work was born.

Le premier tirage avait paru à Alger en août 1941, et un troisième fut exécuté au premier trimestre 1945. Ce sont d'abord Armand Guibert (1906-1990) et Jean Amrouche (1906-1962) qui révèlent García Lorca dans Les Cahiers de Barbarie en 1935. Puis Edmond Charlot, l'un des plus grands éditeurs de la France libre, originaire d'Alger, publie la première édition intégrale du Romancero gitan en français, avec la traduction de Félix Gattegno, en 1941. Ce titre est le premier de la collection "Poésie et théatre" publié par Albert Camus.
