Pere Coromines, una de les figures històriques del republicanisme a Catalunya, va ser jutjat en el tristament famós Procés de Montjuïc, acusat d?haver instigat l?atemptat anarquista contra una processó religiosa, el 7 de juny de 1896, el dia de Corpus, al carrer dels Canvis Nous, i que va acabar ocasionant dotze morts. Detingut per les seves concomitàncies amb l?anarquisme, i amb una petició de pena de mort per part del fiscal, Coromines passà deu mesos tancat als soterranis del Castell de Montjuïc. Finalment absolt pel Tribunal Suprem, el 1897 va ser desterrat un temps a França per les autoritats espanyoles.
