Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. London: Printed For The Company of Booksellers, no date, but late 18th century. 32mo [5 1/2 inches high]. [3] + vii + 163pp + [1]+ [3pp adv.]. Frontispiece engraving has a small hole in it from what appears to be the burn from dropped ash. Brown calf, spine replaced with cloth long ago. Very good. A popular edition, apparently quite scarce, of this important shipwreck narrative. As a midshipman, Byron sailed in the squadron under George Anson on his voyage around the world. Byron made it only to southern Chile where his ship was wrecked. The book is a chronicle of disaster followed by adventures and troubles.

Añadir al carrito185pp, [1]. With an engraved frontispiece. Uncut in original publisher's printed powder blue paper boards. Rubbed and and stained, spine heavily worn. A rare survival in the original unsophisticated state of a provincially published Regency edition of Royal Navy officer John Byron's (1723- 1786) account of his survival of a shipwreck in 1741. A midshipman on board the Wager, Byron was amongst the survivors who were wrecked off the Chilean coast whilst rounding the Cape Horn. Imprisoned by the natives, and later handed over to the Spanish authorities, the remaining crew did not return to England until 1746. Byron went on to command the Dolphin in her voyage around the world between 1764 and 1766, and later became governor of Newfoundland. His narrative, first published in 1768, provided source material for a shipwreck scene in Don Juan by Romantic poet Byron, John Byron's grandson. OCLC records copies of this edition at just four locations (BL, NLA, State Library of New South Wales, and Toronto); COPAC adds no further. Size: 12mo.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. 257 pp. First edition; later 3/4 brown calf; top edge gilt; beige cloth boards; vertical engraved fp. (shipwreck of the Wager) with tissue guard. Internally pristine with incidental oxidation; otherwise very good. Hinges weak; tape repair tail of spine. Admiral Byron's narrative of the loss of the Wager is one of the most thrilling accounts in the language, and supplied his illustrious descendant with many particulars for the shipwreck in Don Juan' (Sabin). Byron, later a noted Pacific explorer in his own right, and eventually governor of Newfoundland, was known as "foul weather Jack"; he was a midshipman aboard the Wager and his narrative provides a notable supplement to the main account of Anson's voyage. Byron gives 'an account of pillaging, treachery, and murder by the crew, most of whom claimed that since their pay ceased the moment the ship was lost they were no longer subject to military discipline and it was every man for himself. It told of Byron's own living off the sea, without shelter or clothing, on the 'most unprofitable spot on the globe of the earth'; of his going without a full meal for thirteen months; of his living three years in the lands of the Spaniards and of his eventual return to England almost five years after the shipwreck' (R.E. Gallagher, Byron's Journal, Hakluyt Society, 1964). It was for this, Byron (and not for the poet as was long assumed) that Cook named Byron Bay on the north coast of New South Wales. . The wreck of the Wager led to major changes in British nautical law relating to shipwreck. "Admiral Byron's narrative is one of the most thrilling accounts in the language, and supplied his illustrious descendant [Lord Byron, the poet] with many particulars for the shipwreck in Don Juan."
