Añadir al carritoleather_bound. First edition. 83 pages. 19 x 12 cm. First edition of Fielding's first play and second publication. Love in Several Masques was quite the triumph for the 20-year-old Fielding. It opened on February 16, 1728, in Drury Lane, with Colley Cibber and Mrs. Oldfield in the cast, and its competition was Gay's Beggar's Opera and Vanburgh's The Provok'd Husband. Very light toning throughout with reasonable text margins, uncommon in most rebindings of the period. Bookplate of Louis C. Asher, creator of the first Sears, Roebuck catalogue, father-in-law of Stanley Kunitz, and armorial bookplate of Viscount Birkenhead. Marbled endpapers, inner dentelles, gilt cover panels. Late 19th century polished brown calf backstrip lettered in gilt. Aeg. Near fine.

Añadir al carrito[viii], 82, [2] pp. 8vo. First edition. First edition. [viii], 82, [2] pp. 8vo. First edition of the 20-year-old Fielding's first play and his second surviving publication. "Fielding's career as dramatist began auspiciously enough when, as an unknown author in his twentieth year, his first play, the comedy Love in Several Masques, was staged by Cibber at Drury Lanean extraordinary favour due probably to the influence of Lady Mary, to whom Fielding dedicated the published version" (ODNB). In the Preface Fielding acknowledges the difficulty of competing for audiences with Gay's Beggar's Opera and Vanburgh's The Provok'd Husband. Love in Several Masques would run for only 4 nights, and Fielding would shortly depart for Holland to study, his next theatrical works not appearing until 1730. Cross III, p. 290 Disbound. First three leaves detached. In a custom gray card folder.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Love In Several Masques is a novel written by the renowned English author Henry Fielding. The story revolves around the romantic pursuits of the protagonist, Horatio, who is in love with the beautiful and wealthy Emilia. However, Emilia's father, who disapproves of Horatio's social status, arranges for her to marry a rich but unscrupulous suitor named Bellamy. To win Emilia's hand, Horatio disguises himself as a wealthy nobleman and attends a masquerade ball, where he meets and falls in love with another woman, the charming and witty Harriet. As Horatio juggles his feelings for both women, his true identity is eventually revealed, leading to a series of dramatic events and unexpected twists.Fielding's novel is a satirical commentary on the social norms and conventions of 18th-century English society, particularly the rigid class distinctions and the emphasis on wealth and status. The story is also a reflection on the nature of love and the complexities of human relationships.Overall, Love In Several Masques is a witty and entertaining novel that combines romance, humor, and social commentary in a delightful and engaging way.Rattle. Pugh! there's a Rival, indeed! Besides, I am sensible that I am the happy He whom she has chosen out of our whole Sex. She is stark mad in Love, poor Soul! and let me alone when I have made an Impression. I tell yee, Sirs, I have had Opportunities, I have had Encouragements, I have had Kisses and Embraces, Lads; but, mum. Now, if you tell one Word, Devil take me, if ever I trust you with a Secret again. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
