Veintimiglia no era un adversario para la talla espiritual de Montalvo; lo era más bien García Moreno, a quien mató su pluma cuando quiso hacer del Ecuador un refugio del despotismo. Pero las Catilinarias no van directamente contra García Moreno, sino contra un tiranuelo intrascendente. ¿Es ese un argumento? Esta obra es una de las joyas de la literatura política de combate en la historia de la lengua española. Pocos han podido llegar antes que él a la misma altura y pocos después de él, si es que llegó alguno.
