Gabriel García Márquez (1927 2014) was a Colombian novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter, and journalist. Considered one of the most significant authors of the 20th century, he was awarded the 1972 Neustadt International Prize for Literature and the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature. He pursued a self-directed education that resulted in leaving law school for a career in journalism. From early on he showed no inhibitions in his criticism of Colombian and foreign politics. His works have achieved significant critical acclaim and widespread commercial success, most notably for popularizing a literary style known as magic realism, which uses magical elements and events in otherwise ordinary and realistic situations. Some of his works are set in the fictional village of Macondo (mainly inspired by his birthplace, Aracataca) , and most of them explore the theme of solitude. Upon García Márquez's death in April 2014, Juan Manuel Santos, the president of Colombia, called him "the greatest Colombian who ever lived. Leaf Storm (La Hojarasca) was García Márquez's first novella and took seven years to find a publisher, finally being published in 1955. García Márquez notes that "of all that he had written (as of 1973) , Leaf Storm was his favorite because he felt that it was the most sincere and spontaneous. " All the events of the novella take place in one room, during a half-hour period on Wednesday 12 September 1928. It is the story of an old colonel (similar to García Márquez's own grandfather) who tries to give a proper Christian burial to an unpopular French doctor. The colonel is supported only by his daughter and grandson. The novella explores the child's first experience with death by following his stream of consciousness. The book also reveals the perspective of Isabel, the Colonel's daughter, which provides a feminine point of view. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 189 pages First Edition Thus (1983); unstated. First published in 1955.

Añadir al carritoFirst edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author's first book. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers by artist Cecilia Porras. In very good condition, name to the title page. La Hojarosca was first published in Bogota, Columbia in 1955, later translated into English and published in 1972, as The Leaf Storm. Widely celebrated as the first appearance of Macondo, the fictitious village later celebrated in One Hundred Years of Solitude, La Hojarosca was a testing ground for many of the themes and characters later immortalized in One Hundred Years of Solitude. "Garcia Marquez has extraordinary strength and firmness of imagination and writes with the calmness of a man who knows exactly what wonders he can perform" (Alfred Kazin, New York Times Book Review).

Añadir al carritoFirst edition of the author's first book. Cover by Cecilia Porras, 137, [5] pp. The colophon states a printing size of 4000, but the publisher's finances made it such that they could only retrieve copies as they were paid for, so most copies are assumed to have been left there, either pulped or lost. García Márquez himself stated that, prior to One Hundred Years of Solitude, no more than 700 copies of his books were sold, and that this was the case here. In this period in Colombia, it would've been highly unlikely for a relatively unknown author to print more than 1000 copies of a work, and that the number 4000 was more likely an ideal, or a marketing technique. Fau 15; Klein A1.a Stapled in printed self-wrappers with moderate wear and chipping to tips of spine, bit of wear and soiling to extremities, ink scribble on front cover, bookseller's stamp to back cover crossed out in ink, ownership initials to front blank, ownership signature and date to title page, and text evenly tanned. Añadir al carritoFirst Argentinian edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author's first book. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers. Signed by Gabriel Garcia Marquez on the front free endpaper. From the library of Gregory Rabassa, with his signature. Rabassa was the translator of La Hojaraca into English and Cien Anos de Soledad, among others. He was a translator of the works of several major Latin American novelists, includingÂJulio Cortázar,ÂJorge AmadoÂandÂGabriel GarcÃa Márquez. On the advice of Cortázar, GarcÃa Márquez waited three years for Rabassa to schedule translatingÂOne Hundred Years of Solitude. Garcia Marquez later declared Rabassa's translation to be superior to the Spanish original. In good condition. Añadir al carritoFirst edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author's first book. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers by artist Cecilia Porras. Signed by the translator Gregory Rabassa on the half-title page, with the opening sentence transcribed, "Nada en este mundo debe ser mas tremendo que los escombros de un hombre. Gregory Rabassa." Rabassa was the translator of La Hojaraca into English and Cien Anos de Soledad. Laid in is the original Bogota bookseller's bookmark. Garcia Marquez has been quoted as saying that prior to the publication of One Hundred Years of Solitude none of his books had sold more than 700 copies. Despite the poor sales and even after the success of Cien Anos de Soledad, Garcia Marquez described La Hojarasca as the favorite of his own works because of its spontaneity and honesty. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. This present example was purchased upon publication and well-cared for. This is by far the nicest example we have seen.
