Hoffmann, die in den 'Fantasiestücken in Callot's Manier' erschienen. Die Abfolge der Einzelstücke in den Kreisleriana ist aber nicht zufällig und als Ganzes bilden sie ein geschlossenes Werk. Hoffmanns Roman 'Lebens-Ansichten des Katers Murr' enthält weitere Kreisler-Fragmente. Der Kapellmeister Johannes Kreisler gilt als die Künstlerfigur der Romantik überhaupt. Seine Differenzen mit der Welt folgen aus einer Ausweglosigkeit: die Bindung des Künstlers an das bürgerliche Publikum.
