Dust jacket has light rubbing and a few minuscule wrinkles at the edges, else clean and unmarked. Pages pristine and intact. Replete with color illustrations of Register's work. Preface by Peter Selz, Professor Emeritus of Art History at UC Berkeley. 192 pp., including illustrations, Foreword, Preface, Notes, Bibliography, Chronology, and Index. John Register (1939-1996) was an American Photorealist whose influences included Ralph Goings and Richard Estes. His meditations on human spaces vacant of humans were an attempt to find ?relatable stillness,? inviting the viewer to notice what emotions take up residence in an empty cafe corner or bus stop. Fun story: Register excused himself in the middle of a meeting at his high profile advertising job and just walked out to become a full-time painter, essentially telling the man to stick it. Elegant prose on Barnaby's part, evenly matched to the subjectmatter.

Añadir al carritoFirst Eidtion Limited #77 of 80 copies. SIGNED by Register and Conrad on Limitation page. Original etching (11" x 8 1/2"; image side 6" x 6") laid in, SIGNED & numbered "77/100" by Register. Large 4to. 110 pp. Color reproductions of Register's paintings on most pages. Bibliography. Plum colored cloth binding with title label on front cover; housed in publisher's plum cloth slipcase. A fine copy of this scarce limited publication. John Register (19391996) was an American realist artist noted for his paintings and drawings, which were notably often minimalist, spare depictions of hotels, cafés, and empty chairs. His paintings ". chronicle a search for overlooked beauty in unpeopled places. As a record of America's depersonalized landscapes, his paintings of empty coffee shops in Los Angeles, old hotels in Chicago and bus stations in the Southwestern desert celebrate sunlight, but also a haunting stillness tinged with regret and hope." - Barnaby Conrad III. The paintings illustrated in this book are works by Register created between 1973 and 1988.
