Der Einband ist etwas fleckig, nach dem Vorsatzblatt und vor dem hinteren Einbanddeckel sind die Innengelenke sichtbar, sonst handelt es sich um ein gut erhaltenes Exemplar mit nur leichten Gebrauchsspuren. In Frankfurt erschienene, um zwei spätere Werke ergänzte Ausgabe des erstmals 1556 erschienenen wichtigsten Prosawerks des italienischen Humanisten, das als erstes Symbollexikon der Renaissance gilt. Valeriano Bolzanio (1477 - 1558) war seit 1509 in Rom, wo er von Julius II. und den beiden folgenden Medici-Päpsten Leo X. und Clemens VII. gefördert und Dozent an der päpstlichen Universität wurde. "Es ist ein Riesenwerk, in dem der Autor den gesamten Symbolschatz der fleißig durchgearbeiteten alten Literatur nach Motiven der Hieroglyphenzeichen (Tieren, Körperteilen usw.) zu ordnen versucht. Interesante volumen que reúne cinco obras de Piero Valeriano Bolzani (1477-1558), humanista italiano muy famoso en su tiempo, nacido en Belluno, de familia humilde, que estudió filosofía en Padua, conoció al Cardenal Giovanni de Medici, futuro Papa León X, tomó las órdenes y ganó títulos y honores, llegando a ser tutor de Alejandro e Hipolíto de Médicis. A la muerte de ambos, volvió a Padua, y aquí se dedicó a escribir hasta su muerte en 1558. Tuvo un gran éxito con la primera de las tres obras aquí reunidas, los "Jerogíficos", en dos tomos, que publicó junto a los redescubiertos 119 jerogíficos del mago egipcio Horapolo Niliacus, que se dijo que habían sido usados por los faraones. Estos títulos de P. Valeriano forman el primer diccionario de simbolos del renacimiento, y significaron la popularización de este género. Se publicaron por primera vez en Basilea, en 1556, fueron varias veces reimpresos y traducidos a otras lenguas. Cierra el volumen su obra poética, en latín, que fue muy celebrada en su época.
