Der französische Philosoph Gilles Deleuze und sein Freund und Kollege Félix Guattari, der als Psychiater und Psychoanalytiker tätig war, gehören ohne Frage zu den bedeutendsten postmodernen Denkern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der Begriff Postmoderne wird in diesem Zusammenhang im Sinne de Toro's verstanden:'La postmodernidad [.] es la posibilidad de una nueva organización del pensamiento y del conocimiento en una forma realmente 'abierta' a causa de la relativización de los paradigmas totalitarios, de la descentración del gran DISCURSO, de la gran HISTORIA y de la VERDAD.' (de Toro 1997: 11) In Zusammenhang mit ihrer Kritik am Rationalismus, Essentialismus und Kapitalismus haben Deleuze und Guattari in ihren zahlreichen Werken und Veröffentlichungen neue Ideen, Impulse und Konzepte geliefert, die unter anderem traditionelle Wissenskonzepte und -organisation in Frage stellen und auf eine neue Art und Weise zu beschreiben versuchen. Von Deleuze stehen umfangreiche Publikationen zu Themen wie Philosophie, Literatur, Film und Kunst zur Verfügung. Als herausragende Werke sind vor allem 'Différence et répétition', 'Logique du sens', 'L'Anti-Oedipe' und 'Mille plateaux' zu nennen, die letzten beiden entstanden in Zusammenarbeit mit Félix Guattari. Im Rahmen des Seminars 'Boom- Postboom: Crack!' spielen die Postmoderne an sich und damit verbundene Begriffe wie Rhizom, différance und Dekonstruktion eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Untersuchung von literarischen Werken, die durch ihre neuen literarischen Verfahren paradigmenbildend waren. In Borges' oevre sind ebendiese Bilder, Techniken und Ideen bereits Jahrzehnte vor den Veröffentlichungen von Deleuze und Guattari enthalten. Borges galt Deleuze und Guattari geradezu als Inspiration und Referenz für die Entwicklung ihrer Rhizom- Theorie. Das von ihnen entwickelte Modell des Rhizoms ist Teil eines neuen und geradezu revolutionären Verständnisses der Strukturen und Funktionsweisen unserer eigenen Gesellschaft, als auch der Organisation von Wissen und Macht.

First edition, sole printing, of the author's scarce first collection of short stories. Many of the stories for which Borges is best remembered appear here, including "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius", "Pierre Menard, autor del Quijote", "La lotería en Babilonia", and "La biblioteca de Babel". After two decades publishing mostly poetry and literary criticism, Borges turned his imagination to short story writing while working as an assistant in the Miguel Cané Municipal Library. He dispatched his librarian's duties in an hour, in order to spend the rest of the day in the basement writing. El jardin de senderos que se bifurcan was later republished with an additional six stories as Ficciones (1944), which won Borges international acclaim. Foster A72.1. Octavo.
