In the American West was first published in conjunction with the exhibition at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. Seven years earlier, the museum had commissioned Avedon to photograph ordinary people living in the Western US. Between 1979 and 1984, Avedon made numerous trips through the region and photographed over 800 subjects, of which about 120 were included in the final exhibition. Parr & Badger, vol. 2, p. 38.

Richard Avedon (1923-2004) was probably the most important fashion photographer of the twentieth century. He had a long and glorious career, working for the likes of Harper's Bazaar (whose art director, Alexey Brodovitch, discovered Avedon working as an advertising photographer for a department store), The New Yorker, Life and Vogue for whom he was the lead photographer between 1973 and 1988. In addition to his groundbreaking fashion work Avedon photographed (amongst others) mental hospital patients, The Beatles, the Civil Rights Movement and the fall of the Berlin Wall. His large format portraits of drifters, miners and cowboys, In the American Midwest, became a top selling book and travelling exhibition and is regarded as an important hallmark in 20th Century photography.
