The analysis presented is couched in minimalist terms, as developed in Chomsky (1995) and subsequent work, although not without several modifications, to be discussed in their place. In particular, the hypothesis put forward in Hornstein (2001) and developed in Hornstein (2003) is applied to Latin data in order to test its descriptive and explanatory power. The book assumes some knowledge of the Minimalist Program and, additionally, a basic knowledge of Latin. Translations are added (from published sources, except for short sentences) where it seemed to be appropriate to facilitate reading; and glosses are provided only for less widely known languages. The linguistic material discussed in this study is well-known to all classicists: structures such as accusativus cum infinitivo and bare infinitival clauses in a synchronic setting, restricted to the classical prose, Cicero and (to a lesser degree) Caesar. As a consequence, diachronic development and its perplexities are put aside. // Contents: I. Dramatic personae: 1. Latin (non)configurationality 2. Aspects of Tense 3. Bare Syntax; II. Principium movendi: 4. Infinitely Latin 5. Finite Control or Raising?; Conclusion; Sources".

Firm binding, unbroken/uncreased spine. Price blacked-out on rear cover. -- The work belongs to the field of sociolinguistics and linguistic pragmatics, and concerns Amharic honorific expressions and their cultural constraints. The cultural context which determines the pragmatic accuracy of the grammatical structures is set in the traditions of the Ethiopian Empire that go back many centuries and are deeply rooted in Christianity. But it also comprises changes brought about by communism and later democratic transformations, all against the background of the no less important African reality. The author pays particular attention to linguistic changes that mark transformations in social, political and cultural life, analysing them through the function and distribution of forms of address. She perceives forms of address as a combination of lexical and grammatical means, showing the changes in the way they are used as a result of the historical transformations taking place in Ethiopian society.

One of these is the lack of a detailed account of morphological change in English. One of the aims of the present study is to offer a relatively comprehensive review of the development of English morphology from Old to Modern English. At the same time this book may be considered a companion volume to the earlier account of English historical phonology by the same author. The most important guiding principles of the present English Historical Morphology are: (1) The account of changes in English morphology is chiefly confined to those developments which substantially contributed to the structure of the contemporary morphological system. (2) Attention is focused on those features of dialects which affected the present-day grammatical standard. However, certain other characteristic morphological features of dialects are occasionally dealt with. (3) The illustrative material comes from The Oxford English Dictionary (OED). Especially important for the verification of the OED data were a number of important monographs, especially Roedler (1911/1916; nouns), Price (1910), Rettger (1934), Long (1944), and Krygier (1994; verbs), Although the forms quoted in the Morphology are only selective, they may help the reader to better understand the evolution of the grammatical features of English. (4) Because the number of contributions to the field of morphology is considerably smaller as compared with English historical phonology, the Author has provided references to as many studies and monographs as possible, and suggested additional readings, hence an extensive bibliography which, together with an index of words, closes the volume. English Historical Morphology is primarily designed for the students from the departments of English Philology, especially those taking courses of the history of English (or special courses of OId, Middle, and Present-day English). --- Contents: Introduction: Chronology; 1. The Morphology of Old English (c.700-1100): -- Nominals: General Statements; Nouns (Vocalic Stems; Consonantal Stems; Grammatical Change in Old English Nouns); Adjectives (Inflection; Comparison); Numerals; Adverbs; Pronouns; Verbs (Weak Verbs; Strong Verbs; Preterite-present Verbs; Anomalous Verbs); 2. The Morphology of Middle English (c.1100-1500): -- General Trends in Morphological Change; Nominals: General Statements; Nouns (Number and Case; Gender); Adjectives; Numerals; Adverbs; Pronouns; Verbs (Weak Verbs; Strong Verbs; Preterite-present Verbs; Anomalous Verbs); 3. The Morphology of Early and Late New English (After 1500): -- General Trends in Morphological Change; Nouns (Number and Case; Gender); Articles; Adjectives; Numerals; Adverbs: Comparison; Pronouns; Verbs (Verbs with a Single Set of the Past/Past Participle Forms; Verbs with Complex Sets of the Past/Past Participle Forms; Defective; Anomalous; Appendix 1: Summary of Chief Morphological Processes in the History of English; Appendix 2: Irregular Verbs in Modern English; Bibliography; Index.

Based on detailed mineralogical-geochemical characteristics of placer gold from technogenous deposits - post-mining tailings and deposits bearing traces of historical mining activity as well as textures indicative of authigenic gold reprecipitation - the author determines the scale of this process in the studied deposits. Illustrated by numerous colour sketches, charts and photographs, the book is intended for geologists and will also be useful to students of geology as well as a wider readership of geotourists interested in recreational gold panning. -- Dr Jan Wierchowiec, assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources in the Faculty of Geology, Warsaw University, is the author of numerous scientific papers as well as case studies, documentation and expert opinions. His scientific interests are focused on placer deposits of gold and other economic minerals, particularly the phenomenon of the formation of 'in situ' authigenic gold in the surficial environment. -- Contents: 1. Oleoculture was always an important part of ancient agriculture, which was the mainstay of the ancient economy and the writing on the subject, both ancient and modern, is immense. The present study centers upon the place of the olive in the agricultural regimes and economies of Roman and Byzantine SyriaPalestine, exploring them in environmental, technological, social and, when possible, economic contexts. The author explores the regional origins of olive cultivation and its wanderings across time and space, discussing typology and chronology of oil facilities and their rural and urban contexts, as well as the economics of production and logistics of olive oil distribution. The book opens with a synthetic presentation of oil production in Roman and Byzantine SyriaPalestine, based for the most part on data, which is gathered and presented in the second part as well as in an online resource, comprising new evidence from Syria, Lebanon and Jordan, as well as an overview of previously available data from Palestine, supplemented with information on the latest discoveries. Prominent among the data from Lebanon are hitherto unpublished records from PCMA excavations in Chhîm and Jiyeh, directed by Tomasz Waliszewski.

This volume, which presents an analysis of faience object from Polish-Egyptian excavations at Tell Atrib, ancient Athribis, will help to remedy this problem. Excavations in Tell Atrib revealed traces of local production of faience objects. They include vessels, figurines, amulets and ushebti recovered from three major strata dated to different phases of the Ptolemaic period. Their provenance from securely dated contexts allowed for tracing typological changes occurring over time, which is of particular importance for studying the history of local faience production. These observations give grounds for analyzing the sources of influence and inspiration of local artisans. Distribution of faience finds at the site gives certain clues as to the role of these objects in everyday and religious life of the inhabitants of the ancient city.
