Zarlino [1517-1590] está considerado uno de los principales teóricos musicales del Renacimiento, su principal tratado Istitutioni harmoniche, inicialmente publicado en 1558, puede considerarse un punto de inflexión entre el sistema modal y tonal. Dio un paso significativo hacia la tonalidad al codificar transposiciones ajenas al sistema modal. Justificó este fenómeno defendiendo la necesidad de poder utilizar escalas a distintas alturas en función de las posibilidades de las voces a acompañar. También se ocupó extensamente de los intervalos de tercios y sextos, sentando las bases de la teoría de las revueltas. Ejemplar que perteneció a John Dowland, el músico y compositor inglés [1563-1620], cuyo exlibris manuscrito figura en portada así como la discreta marginalia en algunos párrafos. La vicenda inizia nel 1558, quando esce la princeps per i tipi di Pietro da Fino, poi multato dall'Inquisizione perché in possesso di libri proibiti, e prosegue con le impressioni del 1561, del 1562 e del 1573, tutte stampate dal senese Francesco de Franceschi, tipografo, editore e libraio attivo a Venezia nella seconda metà del Cinquecento. Nel 1589, pochi mesi prima della morte, Zarlino licenzia l'ultima versione dell'imponente trattato, inserendolo nel primo volume di Tutte l'opere «ora di nuovo corrette, accresciute e migliorate». Nell'ultima redazione, arricchita di esempi musicali e ampliata in molti capitoli, l'autore chiosa scrupolosamente i riferimenti e tutte le citazioni letterarie, senza risparmiare, attraverso pungenti allusioni, le critiche ai diffamatori delle sue Istituzioni. L'opera è suddivisa in quattro parti. Nelle prime due, dedicate agli aspetti «contemplativi», si discetta e si indaga sull'arte sonora come scientia, secondo i canoni della tradizione, con un'approfondita indagine sull'origine della musica e sugli effetti che provoca nel comportamento dell'uomo. Nelle altre due, riservate alla «prattica», vengono fissate in modo didascalico e lapidario le regole da seguire nel contrappunto. Per Zarlino, che non intende introdurre novità clamorose ma chiarire il passato e insieme convalidare la prassi compositiva del suo tempo, la questione musicale è seria, importante, etica e politica insieme.
