William Bouguereau (1825-1905) was an influential French academic painter, who taught a long succession of gifted students, primarily at the private Academie Julian in Paris. Among them, Bouguereau instructed more than two hundred young American artists. 'In the Studios of Paris' provides a unique look at the history of Parisian art education during the last quarter of the 19th century and its profound influence on American art. This landmark publication--the first to focus exclusively on Bouguereau and his American pupils--presents sixty-five paintings, drawings, and prints by the master and eleven of his most prominent students, including Eanger Irving Couse, Elizabeth Gardner Bouguereau, and Robert Henri. A series of carefully researched essays place the artists' work in historical context and discuss various American responses to Bouguereau's painting and pedagogical techniques, along with the subsequent reception and collecting of their work in the United States. Wrapped in complimentary Brodart dust jacket protector. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks.

It's business was mostly mail order from a catalogue. The Perry Magazine was a marketing and communications vehicle from a company involved in schoolroom decoration and the picture study movement at the end of the nineteenth century. The magazine promoted the use of small, inexpensive, reproductions of fine art and contemporary photographs in lessons. Many of the articles in the Perry Magazine contained lessons about moral and ethical issues as well as art history and art appreciation. The content of the Perry Magazine was determined by the economic, social, and political issues of the day. Eugene and Ella met as school principals in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The story of their marriage and business is one of success as capitalist ventures. Having been teachers they understood what teachers needed. The Perry Magazine had a large influence on the introduction of art appreciation and art reproductions into the public school curriculum. Before the publication of the Perry Magazine only the elite had access to fine art. [Ann Rahoi, Autumn 2002]. Small tears to some of the mounting card corners, the plates are all in Very Good clean condition, the hinges to the book have been repaired. Also contains a beautiful colour 'Certificate of Merit' card printed in Austria [probably by Ernest Nister], dated 1904-1906, with the recipients name 'Harry Blackman' as the receiver of the certificate and with his name inside the book. Añadir al carritoTicket, 125 x 90 mm. on card, old adhesive marks to verso. William-Adolphe Bouguereau [1825 - 1905] was a French painter in the realistic style reviled by Impressionist the avant-garde but who enjoyed significant popularity and the prices achieved for his work during his lifetime made him wealthy. He fell out of favour in the early part of the century but there was a revival of interest in the 1980s. The Youth of Bacchus, "La Jeunesse de Bacchus" remained with the artist's family until it was offered for sale at Sotheby's New York in 2019 where it apparently failed to sell on an estimate of $25 - 35,000,000. The catalogue note for the sale reads: "La Jeunesse de Bacchus is a monumental and cinematic tour de force by William Bouguereau. First presented at the Paris Salon of 1884, it remained in the artist's collection until his death, subsequently passing through generations of his descendants. The work's emergence directly from the artist's studio marks an unprecedented offering of a masterpiece by a titan of French Academic painting. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the Paris Salon and the Academic system were the most powerful artistic institutions in the Western world. Visited by hundreds of thousands of viewers annually, engaging and training artists from around the world, vaulting careers and extinguishing others, the Salon's influence on the art world was decisive. While the avant-garde railed against it through the Salon des Refusà s and the Salon d'Automne, William Bouguereau held powerful positions in the Academic network and was firmly ensconced as one of the most prominent members of the French art world.".
