Untrimmed. Unopened. Very Good. First Edition. SIGNED BY VICTOR VEAU to Dr. O. Schürch. Garrison-Morton 5763: "Includes Veau's operation for cleft palate." "A great name in palate and lip surgery between the two World Wars was that of Victor Veau. . . . He modified and improved Langenbeck's and Lane's techniques for closure of the palate making particular use of vomerine flaps for the nasal layer of the repair and between 1921 and 1929 he operated on five hundred cases, with an operative mortality rate of 3.8%. He published marvelous books in 1931 and 1938 with most accurate illustrations made by himself. He employed 'a speech pathologist' and insisted on her collaboration in the rehabilitation of his cleft palate cases; her name was . . . S. Borel. . . . Veau's work stimulated the world effort to improve surgical results and the formidable E. Lexer of Germany eventually came to use Veau's methods. Veau taught that a good palate operation must lengthen the palate, must eliminate surgical dead space and must repair the palatal musculature by including these muscles in the sutures" (Wallace, Progress of Plastic Surgery, p. 124). "Of decisive importance for the technique of cheiloplasties as well as uranoplasties was the French surgeon Victor Veau. . ." (Gabka & Vaubel, Plastic Surgery Past and Present, pp. 53, 56-57). Signed by Author(s).

Epping Victor Veau (1871-1949) "was interested in all aspects of the surgery of children, but devoted himself to perfecting the operations for facial malformations. He not only improved the technique of the operations for split-palate and hare-lip, but the methods of feeding and nursing small children after operation, and with Mlle S Borel (Mme Maisonny) their education in speaking. He also made a profound study of the embryological etiology of these malformations, and concluded that they are the result of abnormalities in the formation of the face by reabsorption of the bucco-nasal membrane and not, as had been believed, by a failure of the two sides of the embryonic facial tissues to meet. Veau's two books which summarize his life-work became classics, and his work on speech-education was awarded the Montyon prize. He made many contributions to the literature and contributed to various "systems", and wrote a textbook of current practice and emergency surgery (1904), which ran to nine editions. At one time, 1909-11, he was much interested in the prospects of thymectomy, but abandoned the operation in favour of radio-therapy."
