Text in Japanese and English. - Oban Nishikie - (Important Art Object) The Yamamba (Woman of the Mountain) is popularly thought of as a sorceress living in the mountains, but she actually was a voracious type of prostitute who preyed on travelers along mountain roads. Edo-period folk songs describe her as a wretched hag plying her wiles on woodcutters or working at weaving. Utamaro has created a type-portrait which effectively suggests the Yamamba's role as a lowly prostitute. Baring her bosom, she is letting Kintaro suck on her big breasts. But, as always in Utamaro prints, the face is so beautiful that one is tempted to speak of worldly desires and spiritual salvation. Although this print of the Yamamba is an excellent work, it does not reach the heights of the masterwork previously illustrated in Plate 9, where the reader may find a further discussion of this subject. He might have proceeded further to say that not only ukiyoe artists but most painters through all ages have produced art with a varying degree of erotic content. Ukiyoe artists, however, excelled at the practice, and their touches were very expressive and sensual, yet artistic. Their psychological interpretation is superb and is generally free from vulgarity. The greatest artist in this genre was Utamaro. Erotic series usually consisted of twelve pictures, the introductory one of which, like this, could be shown publicly. Text in Japanese and English. - Oban Nishikie - (Important Art Object) Utamaro II, the designer of this print, was a pupil of the illustrious Utamaro I. His family name was also Kitagawa, and he was commonly called Tetsugoro. The studio names he used included Riteitei Kocho and Setcho. From 1824 he began to use the pen name Koikawa Harumachi for his writings and Baigado for his paintings. Legend says that he married the widow of his teacher, Utamaro I. In this print, the two courtesans are depicted with oval faces, with their hair rounded out at the sides and done in large chignons, which was the contemporary fashion of the early Bunka era (1804-1818). The artist of this print followed closely the style of his teacher, especially the one of the early years of the Bunka era. Though his works reveal affinity to Utamaro I, there are some marked differences between the prints of these two artists. In Utamaro Il's work, the neck is depicted rather thick in proportion to the face, and the eyes are more slanted than in that of Utamaro I. The coloring of the two beauties may be slightly crude in comparison with the works of Utamaro I, a refined colorist at all times. Text in Japanese and English. - Naga-oban Nishikie - (Important Art Object) Many ukiyoe artists designed prints of Kintaro, the strong boy of Japanese folklore. Kiyonaga did almost forty different prints of Kintaro, usually with a demon, and such prints were apparently sold as charms to drive out pestilence. Utamaro also did many versions of the Kintaro story, but most of them show him with his wetnurse Yamamba, the Woman of the Mountain. It is difficult to view the present print, Utamaro's masterpiece among his representations of Kintaro, purely as a depiction of mother love, utterly devoid of sexual meaning. In the Edo period, Yamamba was a term for harlots, often outcast from the Yoshiwara, who frequented the mountains along the post roads and catered to travelers.
