First Edition. Signed and inscribed by the author / actress and screenwriter Salka Viertel on the copyright page: ÒTo Helene with best wishes, Salka, Klosters, Sept. 1969Ó. Near fine copy with some faint foxing to the outer edges and the barest hint of edge wear in a lightly handled and foxed price-clipped dust jacket with some small chips and tears. Salka Viertel (1889 - 1978) worked in Hollywood, under contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer from 1933 to 1937, and co-wrote many memorable film scripts, especially for her close friend Great Garbo, including Queen Christina (1933) and Anna Karenina (1935). Viertel also starred with Garbo in MGMÕs German language version of Anna Christie is 1930. She married Austrian-born author and director Berthold Viertel in 1918 and they established a professional connection with the great German film director F.W. Murnau. Salka and Berthold lived in Los Angeles and Santa Monica, choosing to remain in the U.S. following HitlerÕs rise in Germany, subsequently becoming part of the European intellectual and cinema community in Hollywood whose members also included Sergei Eisenstein, Charlie Chaplin, Arnold Schoenberg, Christopher Isherwood, Hanns Eisler, Bertolt Brecht, Max Reinhard, and Thomas Mann. The Viertels helped many European filmmakers escape the oppressive Nazi-led creative scene in Germany, where they aided them in establish personal and professional connections in the Hollywood film community. Later, during the McCarthy era, Salka was under suspicion of being a communist and could no longer work in the U.S. After her divorce from Berthold in 1947, she continued to life in the States, but moved to Klosters in Switzerland in 1953, where later her son, author and screenwriter Peter Viertel and his wife actress Deborah Kerr lived. She was living in Klosters when this book was published, as noted in her inscription, and it was in Klosters that she died on October 20, 1978 at age 89. Copies of this book were very rarely signed by Viertel, making this a very special copy indeed.

Slight faint creasing, with faint stains to one edge.
