The colophon at the rear of the book states, âEsta obra fue impresa en Mexico, D.F. el Ano de 1943, bajo la Direccion del Senor Don Francisco Gonzalez de la Vega, Presidente de la Seccion de Artes Graficas de la Camara de Industria de Transformacion y consta de un mil ejemplares numerados. No. 159.â Includes line illustrations and numerous plates. Line illustrations in black and white, full color plates. True works of art by the great Valencian painter depicting the fighting bull from birth to death, in the bullring, including bullfighting on horseback. Hardbound in handmade paper made to look like cowhide. Sewn on five cords. Gilt titling. Crown and foot of spine are worn and missing material. The first few pages and those with plates are on a quality, heavy clay paper whose edges near front were exposed briefly to moisture. They were separated with little damage (wide margins) but the evidence remains. Front endpapers may be missing; Mr. Brand included two photocopies â" one of the frontis illustration, which may be a title page, but probably not since the other color copy is of the copyright page which was on the reverse of the title page (and would have â" with the endpapers â" have been the first gathering or signature in the book). Bullfighting was the highlight of his work. His enormous love for the world of bullfighting tempted him to go into active life and only the deep devotion he felt for painting made him give up his determined commitment to be a bullfighter. Once, when Joselito âGalloâ was contemplating one of the artist's magnificent posters, he said: "The one who has painted this, he knows how to fight, even though he has never fought.".
