Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. Five volumes bound in three (published between 1877 and 1888), quarto. [8], 424; [1], 448; 202; 257; 73, [1] ff. Text reads from right to left; foliation in Hebrew characters. Vocalized text in Aramaic and Hebrew. Contemporary quarter black calf over pebbled boards (spine ends chipped; joints partially cracked, but cords holding strong). Speckled edges; titles tooled in blind at spines. Edges embrowned and somewhat brittle, with very occasional marginal tears or small chips. A good copy with clean text throughout. Uncommon edition of the Zohar, comprising chiefly a kabbalistic Midrash on the the first five books of the Hebrew Bible (Torah), mixed with short statements, long expositions and narratives concerning its traditional author, the second-century Jewish sage Simeon b. Yohai and his companions, with footnotes and commentary by Isaac Luria (ca. 1534-1572), Moses Cordovero (1522-1570), and Chaim Joseph David Azulai (1724-1806). The main body of the text is arranged according to the weekly portions of the Torah, up to and including the portion Pinhas, in Numbers. From Deuteronomy there are only the portions Va-Ethannan, a little of Va-Yelekh, and Ha'azinu. The following sub-sections interspersed within the text are to be noted: Sitrei Torah (Secrets of the Torah), certain pieces on verses from the Book of Genesis, which were printed in separate columns, parallel to the main text of the Zohar, in the portions No'ah, Lekh Lekha, Va-Yera, and Va-Yetzeh; Idra Zuta (The Lesser Assembly), a description of the death of Simeon b. Yohai and his closing words to his followers before his death, a kind of kabbalistic parallel to the death of Moses; Ra'aya Meheimna (The Faithful Shepherd, i.e. Moses), a separate book on the kabbalistic significance of the commandments, the greater part occurring in portions from Numbers and Deuteronomy, notably Pinhas, Ekev, and Ki Tetze; Midrash ha-Ne'elam (The Concealed Midrash), comments on the book of Genesis, centered mainly around creation, the soul, and the world to come, with a few discussions on the nature of God and emanation. The main part of the Zohar and the Midrash ha-Ne'elam were written between 1270 and 1300. As Steinschneider notes, this was a time "when there was an intimate connexion between Judaism and Christianity, and when false prophets and soothsayers appeared everywhere. Its advocates themselves acknowledge that [the Zohar] was unknown even to the great Kabbalistic authors before that time. This work developes the sexual distinctions in respect to the Deity given in the Book Bahir; and also the older Sefirot doctrine, by means of a literal Kabbala, into a Trinitarian doctrine, nevertheless openly attacking Christianity as well as Talmud and halacha [traditional Jewish law]" (Steinschneider). "It is not one book in the accepted sense of the term, but a complete body of literature which has been united under an inclusive title" (EJ). The main body of the Zohar and the Midrash ha-Ne'elam are generally believed to be the work of the Spanish kabbalist Moses ben Shem Tov de Leon (d. 1305). "Printed amid a fierce controversy between those who opposed its publication, among whom were some important kabbalists, and its supporters, the first two editions of the Zohar were published by competing printers in the neighboring cities of Mantua (1558-60) and Cremona (1559-60)" (EJ). An earlier edition of the Zohar appeared at Livorno (where our edition was published) which included the commentaries of Cordovero and Azulai. Italy served an important role in the spread of Kabbalah in terms of printing and as a key stepping stone from which kabbalistic ideas could spread from Safed (Israel) to Europe. Printed with large, easy to read block letters; the vowel pointing is quite unusual for a Jewish Aramaic text. Provenance and annotations: bookplate of Lazarus Goldschmidt (1871-1950), scholar, bibliophile, and translator of the Talmud into German (1897-1935); ink entries and stamps of Arthur Teller, M.D. (in Hebrew and English) at endeaves and top margin of titles; a few notes in pencil translate portions of the Hebrew title pages into English.
