D'abord dessinateur de cartes postales, dans lesquelles il illustre des scènes de la vue quotidienne alsacienne, Waltz se tourne vers le dessin pamphlétaire après sa rencontre avec des artistes de la Revue alsacienne, revue qui fait la promotion de la culture alsacienne et de ses racines françaises. Il participe à des manifestations contre l'annexion allemande, et de 1907 à 1914, publie plusieurs séries de planches et cartes ainsi que des uvres littéraires marquées par son emprunte particulière : des personnages allemands tournés en dérision. Mais c'est en 1912 avec Le Professeur Knatschké, qu'il publie son premier véritable ouvrage antigermanique, suivi de L'Histoire d'Alsace racontée aux petits-enfants et Mon Village. Ces succès nationaux lui valent d'être considéré comme un symbole de la résistance alsacienne à l'Allemagne. Pour Mon Village, Hansi est condamné à un an de prison pour s'être moqué des gendarmes et professeurs allemands. Néanmoins, le succès de ces ouvrages témoigne du partage de ses idées par la population alsacienne à l'époque.

Folio, 35 by 28.5 cm. 104 pp., with color lithographic illustrations on virtually every page, often with the illustration an underlay, in part or whole, to the text, and some illustrations on two pages. While a children's book, this was written when Alsace and Lorraine were a part of Germany, having been ceded by France as the settlement following France's humiliating defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 to 1871, and so Hansi's book was very much a political statement of allegiance to France, which at the time of his writing this was on the verge of entering World War One against Germany, and three years after the publication of this copy, France would regain Alsace. This and Hansi's many other books make him an unique and most beloved writer/illustrator of Alsace and France in general, and his magical illustrations convey the values of Alsatian folk art in their color and simplicity. Condition: cloth binding browned around perimeter and the entirety of the spine. Some edge rubbing and fraying of fabric. A slight shake to the binding. Endpapers with narrow chipping along edge. Leaves age toned, but mostly clean.

Nostalgic look at Alsatian village of yore, and as much of Hansi's writings, about the French-ness of the village and demonizing the German occupiers, who were only recently driven out at the time this copy was issued. The illustrations exude the naive charm of Hansi's best work, whose legacy was to create an enduring visual image of Alsatian life. The decorated cloth boards have soiling and the fabric is worn by the corners and the spine extremities. Inside the pages have age toning but otherwise are clean.
