Retiré à Forges-les-Eaux, il envoya, le 26 pluviose an II, une lettre à Barère se proposant pour une mission d'espionnage à Londres où il disait « connaitre beaucoup de monde ». Arrêté, il fut traduit devant le tribunal révolutionnaire, condamné à mort et guillotiné le même jour que Malesherbes.
