Joaquín García Monge (Costa Rica, 1881-1958) fue hombre de actividad inagotable y personalidad multifacética, que como escritor trajo nuevos temas y posibilidades al desarrollo de la bisoña literatura costarricense, como maestro procuró introducir nuevos programas y técnicas pedagógicas en su país, como promotor cultural, editor y publicista, dio a luz diversas colecciones en las que divulgó obras de autores nacionales y extranjeros, y editó y dirigió varias publicaciones periódicas de contenido socio-político y cultural. Entre estas últimas Repertorio Americano (1919-1959), la más difundida y perdurable, circuló ampliamente por América y Europa y dio fama y prestigio continentales a su director. Hombre de extraña humildad y sencillez, de hábitos casi monacales, García Monge viajó muy poco fuera de su país y se expresaba con cierto desdén modesto cuando se le halagaba o se le solicitaban declaraciones altisonantes. Aparte de tres cortas novelas, un pequeño tomo de relatos, y algunos cuadros y cuentos desperdigados en periódicos y revistas de la época, obras todas publicadas en su juventud, García Monge escribió poco y con excepción de un par de conferencias de cierta extensión, casi todos sus artículos son escritos ocasionales, muy parcos, muy cortos, y que muestran una reticencia orgánica hacia la exposición de un pensamiento sistemático. (168 issues). American Repertoire was a cultural magazine published in San José, Costa Rica by Joaquín García Monge, interrupted between 1919 and 1958. It meant an important discussion forum for the Latin American intelligentsia of the period. Its editor considered journalism as a promotion of democratic ideas and ideals for the common good. Thus, American Repertoire built an international community that professed Americanism. Within its ideological orientation were republicanism, anti-fascism and pacifism. "And it has to go when it comes not only to find the proper terms for a history of contemporary American culture, but when you want to underline the knowledge of the great figures of our continent." Said in the words of the editor of the publication, «the journals are used so that in them the thinking or enlightened generation of a country or a continent says what it thinks and feels about the multiple incitations of life. For this there must be freedom, tolerance and the inevitable action and reaction of the opinions that appear in the magazines ». The intellectual beginnings of the American Repertoire magazine are related to the other «Repertoire» that Andrés Bello founded in London a century earlier. On September 1, 1919, the first issue of the American Repertoire appears, whose life lasts for 39 years until May 1958, when its editor dies, having reached the number 1181. It was directed by a single man, Joaquín García Monge, who He had accumulated a long experience as an editor, in newspapers such as La Siembra y Verdad, companies shared with other Costa Rican intellectuals such as Roberto Brenes Mesén and José María «Billo» Zeledón Brenes.
