SHIPS THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING AND CARDBOARD. Every year the University of Missouri School of Journalism holds a competition to judge the best photojournalism of the year. It's known as Pictures of the Year (POY) and is one of the most prestigious arbiters of professional news photography in the world. In 1992, during the selection process the judges were recorded as they discussed the entrants in the various categories. Words on Pictures, issued as a supplement to the National Press Photographers Association's magazine, News Photographer, presents transcriptions of those conversations. That year Eugene Richards received three first place awards for different photo-essays, which are all extensively covered. Other notable first place prizes were awarded to Christopher Anderson, Steve McCurry, Randy Olson, Ken Light, Anthony Suau, and David Turnley. Other photographers of note whose work is presented include Sebastiao Salgado, Michael "Nick" Nichols, Stephen Shames, Bruno Barbey, and James Nachtwey. Edited by Jerry Jackson; introductions by Jackson and Bill Kuykendall. 28 newsprint pages; profusely illustrated in color and b&w; tabloid, 11.5 x 13.75 inches. Judges bios, list of winners.
