Frisches und sauberes Hardcover-Exemplar in gutem Zustand mit Original-Schutzumschlag. Zweisprachige Ausgabe in Italienisch und Englisch. "Della Porta's play of passion, ribaldry, and aristocratic rivalry is a masterpiece by the finest Italian comic playwright of the late cin-quecento. Renaissance drama was launched early in Italy in a profusion of works by Ariosto and Machiavelli's generation. By the time of Shakespeare and Lope de Vega, Italian comedy had achieved a complexity of form and content that combined classical technique with experimental mixtures of commedia dell'arte style and tragic motifs, realism and symbolism, lyric word and theatrical gesture. Few Italian comedies of the late Renaissance are available in modern editions, and almost none have been translated into English. Based on the editio princeps of 1601, this is the first annotated critical edition of Gli duoi fratelli rivali. A facing-page English translation accompanies the Italian text. In her introductory essay, Professor Clubb examines the historical and theoretical context in which Renaissance comedy matured and explores the idea of an international dramaturgy by comparing Della Porta's play with Shakespeare's contemporary treatment of the same story in Much Ado about Nothing." Añadir al carritoBrossura. Condición: come nuovo. Estado de la sobrecubierta: ottimo. edizione speciale. RARO. Osleriana 3719 The ancient "science" of character-reading from physiognomy saw it's Renaissance revival in della Porta's widely influential book - one of the first such manuals to be illustrated -, which itself was the ultimate foundation of Lavater's revival of the idea in the late 18th century. Porta himself was a major figure in the emergence of natural science, though in typical Renaissance fashion he combined elements of credulity with recognition of the importance of experiment and experiential confirmation of preconceived theories. Porta's most famous botanical work, Phytognomonica - This edition was published in Rouen in 1650, 62 years after the first edition appeared in Naples in 1588. It is sometimes held that della Porta was the real originator of the botanical Doctrine of Signatures in any approximation to a scientific form. The theory was that Divine Providence had formed plants in such a way as to indicate the ailments they would cure, e.g. a walnut looked like the human brain, so would cure head ailments. The illustrations of the 'Phytognomonica' are helpful in interpreting Porta's view. The part of man's body which is healed by a particular herb, or the animal whose bites or stings can be cured by it, are represented in the same woodcut as the herb. The back view of a human head with a thick crop of hair is introduced into the block with the Maidenhair Fern, which is an ancient specific for baldness; a Pomegranate with its seeds exposed, and a plant of 'Toothwort,' with its hard, white scale-leaves, are represented in the same figure as a set of human teeth'. (Arber, Herbals p. 209) A scorpion completes a picture of plants with articulated seed vessels; a shoot of heliotrope is also included, since, to Porta's vivid imagination its curved flower spike recalled a scorpion's tail (Arber, Herbals pp. 251-2) Arber also notes the influence of this work on the herbalists of the next century, notably Johann Popp, William Cole and Nicholas Culpeper, all exponents of Paracelsus and Porta, in their theories of Astrological Botany. Giambattista della Porta (1535? 4 February 1615), also known as Giovanni Battista Della Porta, was an Italian scholar, polymath and playwright who lived in Naples at the time of the Scientific Revolution and Reformation.Giambattista della Porta spent the majority of his life on scientific endeavors. He benefited from an informal education of tutors and visits from renowned scholars. His most famous work, first published in 1558, is entitled Magiae Naturalis (Natural Magic). In this book he covered a variety of the subjects he had investigated, including occult philosophy, astrology, alchemy, mathematics, meteorology, and natural philosophy. He was also referred to as "professor of secrets". In 1586 della Porta published a work on physiognomy, De Humana Physiognomonia libri IV (1586). This influenced the Swiss eighteenth-century pastor Johann Kaspar Lavater as well as the 19th century criminologist Cesare Lombroso. "Porta was one of the pioneers of the scientific outlook, not himself a discoverer but a popularizer . We are prone to think today of physiognomy as antiscientific, but it was in fact a way of emphasizing the dependence of behavior on body,

Small square octavo, [190mm x 120mm], pp (16), 539, very heavily age-toned with some staining, engraved vignette title, 31 woodcut illustrations, bound in a later full vellum, slightly worn and marked, marbled endpapers, leather title label on spine. Originally in the library of a Franciscan monastery (?) with a semi legible provenance at the base of the spine and an ink signature on either side of the vignette; the ink from the signature has corroded the paper over 400 years with the result being a small hole. The author and brief title is also written on the bottom edge. A later owner was the French mathematician Eugene Prouhet with his stamp on the first blank leaf. [A devotee of the doctrine of signatures, Porta pushed this theory to great lengths. "The illustrations are helpful in interpreting his point of view. The part of a man's body which is healed by a particular herb, or the animal whose bites or stings can be cured by it, are represented in the same woodcut as the herb. The back view of a human head with a thick crop of hair is introduced into the block with the Maidenhair Fern, which is an ancient specific for baldness; a Pomegranate with its seeds exposed, and a plant of 'Toothwort,' with its hard, white scale-leaves, are represented in the same figure as a set of human teeth." ARBER - Herbals.].

"Porta was one of the pioneers of the scientific outlook, not himself a discoverer but a popularizer. We are prone to think today of physiognomy as antiscientific, but it was in fact a way of emphasizing the dependence of behavior on body, a sort of physiological psychology." - Diamond 23.5. Porta's De humana physiognomia "clearly established the doctrine of the correspondence between the external form of the body and the internal form of the person"--DSB XI, 97.
