The Dutch engraver apprenticed with prolific print publisher Hieronymus Cock and spent the last twelve years of his life in Italy, where he lived for a time with the painter Titian in Venice, and where he produced engravings based on works by Titian, Raphael, Caravaggio and others. "In the use of a more open system of lines, contrasting with the closer hatching of Marcantonio and is followers, Cort was perhaps the pioneer in Italy, and the immediate inspirer of Agostino Carraci."
