The present work, which examines the reception of pieces of this kind during the reign of the Habsburgs, is therefore intended to fill an important gap. Together with lacquered objects and exotica, porcelain circulated throughout the Spanish Empire, passing through the Americas, but until now there had been no record of the pieces that reached the Spanish market. However, Krahe reconstructs the journey of this porcelain ware from southern China, analyzing what it was like, how it was displayed and stored, to what uses it was put and how it was valued in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spain. Based on thorough archival research, a systematic survey of archaeological discoveries, a rich documentary corpus and a great deal of illustrations, the author provides an insight into a hitherto unknown aspect, opening up new perspectives for historians, art historians, and historians of material culture and taste. Cinta Krahe, who holds a Master's degree in Chinese Art and Archaeology from the School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS), University of London, earned a doctorate from Leiden University and has been teaching for many years as an expert on decorative arts of East Asia. She was in charge of cataloging the porcelain of the galleon San Diego for the Museo Naval in Madrid and one of the organisers of the exhibition Orientando la mirada: arte asiático en las colecciones públicas madrileñas (Madrid, 2009). She is a member of the research group Arts of Asia (Complutense University of Madrid), and has participated in numerous university seminars, lectures and courses accross europe.

From this period are preserved, among others, different bronze vessels of great beauty and complexity, used to offer food and wines to the ancestors. This shows us that already at that time the gastronomy and the feast were of great importance in the culture and the rite. In addition, the bronze denoted power as evidenced by the fact that many of those vessels were commissioned by kings and nobles, who took them on their last trip to enjoy them for all eternity. With the Iron Age (4th century BC), the bronzes will lose their ritual function. The discovery of bronze vessels in tombs or graves will be considered as an aupitious sign and will be object of study of emperors and lawyers of later dynasties. The presented exhibition is the final materialization of the will of both cities. The 31 pieces donated by the Shanghai Museum according to a selection from a studied process, form a chronological journey that starts from the end of the mythical Xia dynasty (XVIII - XVI centuries BC) and until the period of the Combatant Kingdoms (475-221 BC). Therefore, the exhibition covers the almost 2,000 years of splendor of the Bronze Age and concludes just before its decline in the third century BC. of C. Aunque España fue una de las principales potencias comerciales y coloniales de la Edad Moderna, su papel en la circulación de las exportaciones de porcelana china distaba mucho de estar claro, por lo que la presente obra, dedicada a la recepción de esta clase de piezas en tiempos de los Austrias, está llamada a llenar un hueco fundamental. Junto con los objetos lacados y las curiosidades exóticas, la porcelana circulaba por el Imperio español pasando por las Américas, pero hasta ahora no había constancia de las piezas que llegaban al mercado peninsular. Sin embargo, Krahe reconstruye el viaje de esas porcelanas desde el sur de China y analiza cómo eran, cómo se exhibían y guardaban, qué usos tenían y qué valor se les daba en la España de los siglos XVI y XVII. A partir de una rigurosa investigación de archivo, un repaso sistemático a los hallazgos arqueológicos, un rico corpus documental y un nutrido aparato gráfico, la autora dibuja un panorama desconocido hasta ahora, abriendo nuevas perspectivas de estudio para historiadores, historiadores del arte, de la cultura material y del gusto.
