Sus poemas juveniles tienen la hechura y la intensidad de las Rimas becquerianas. Sus versos últimos, escritos en los comienzos del siglo XX, están ya en la órbita del simbolismo de Juan Ramón Jiménez y Machado. Se trata de una escritora de fronteras que conduce el hilo de oro de las Rimas becquerianas hasta las Soledades de don Antonio Machado. Los méritos literarios de Mercedes de Velilla son varios. Es una magnífica versificadora, tanto en las estrofas de arte menor como en las del endecasílabo. Escribió poesía popular concisa y misteriosa, en la línea de la mejor poesía oral andaluza. Dejó sonetos de extraordinaria intensidad. En ellos declara, con ardiente precisión y sin ambages, una pasión amorosa frustrada. La fuerza de estos sonetos puede compararse a los de la escritora inglesa Elizabeth Barrett Browning en sus célebres Sonetos del portugués. Finalmente, los poemas escritos en su madurez, ya en los comienzos del siglo XX, son lo más hondo y universal de su obra.
