El botánico, médico, farmacéutico y poeta, Casimiro Gomez de Ortega, nació en Añover de Tajo (Toledo) en 1741, realizando sus primeros estudios en Madrid y Barcelona que amplió en Bolonia donde se graduó como doctor en Filosofía y en Medicina. De vuelta a España, gracias a sus escritos, trabajos y herbarios, consiguió en 1771 la plaza de primer catedrático interino del Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid, cargo que ostentó hasta 1881. Herborizó las faldas de Sierra Morena, Miraflores, El Paular y Aranjuez. En 1779 publicó el Método de desecar las plantas para formar herbarios; descubrió varias especies que aportó a la obra de Quer y que en 1784 publicó como Continuación de la Flora Española. Fue sin duda el gran impulsor de la botánica en España y del establecimiento de cátedras y jardines en las ciudades europeas más importantes.
