Published to celebrate an exhibition concieved by H.H.Prince Faisal Ibn Abdullah Ibn Muhammad Al-Saud. Lavish colour and black and white illustrations throughout (mostly colour). Bound in full green leather with silver horse decorations to spine and red leather title labels. Dust jackets removed when special leather bindings were undertaken. Housed in plain dark green slipcase. Some light creases and marking to text blocks, otherwise generally clean. Leather bindings faded to spine and showing some moderate marking. Set in (Mint Condition, new). fitted in a green slip case. An illustrated and well documented study on the horse in general, the Arab horse and its relation to Arab history in particular. The work depicts illustrations of the earliest representations of horses and chariots from the ancient city of Ur in Mesopotamia. Other earliest pieces include texts on horse care from the Hittite and Assyrian period; together with sculptures and representations of chariots from dynastic Egypt, bronzes from Luristan. Horses saddles dating from 500 B. C. are also discussed, together with samples from the Byzantine period, Central Asia, Benin and pre-islamic Arabia. A large section of the work discusses the theme of horsemanship in Islamic culture, and how Muslim artists depict horses in their illustrated manuscripts.
