Leverage packet analysis to solve real-world networking problems About This Book * Troubleshoot and resolve basic to advanced network problems using packet analysis * Use Wireshark's expert system to identify network anomalies * A practical guide to get you up and running with Wireshark from scratch Who This Book Is For This book is for network administrators, security analysts, students, teachers, and anyone interested in learning about packet analysis using Wireshark. Basic knowledge of network fundamentals, devices, and protocols along with various topologies would be beneficial. What You Will Learn * Review basic traffic capture and tap into the data stream * Become familiar with the Wireshark interface * Use display and capture filters to examine traffic * Summarize the OSI Model and Encapsulation * Dissect the Internet Suite: IP, TCP, UDP, ARP and ICMP * Carry out deep Packet Analysis of Common Protocols: DNS, HTTP, DNS and DHCP * Understand Wireshark's expert system to detect network anomalies * Subset Traffic, insert comments, save and export packet capturesIn Detail Wireshark is a popular and powerful tool that gives you the combination of both a Linux distro (Kali Linux )and an open-source security framework (Metasploit). Wireshark is mainly used to analyze the number of bits and bytes that are flowing through a network. It deals with the second to the seventh layer of network protocols, and the analysis made is presented in a human-readable form. The main goal of this book is to help you monitor and secure your network with the most updated version of WireShark. Wireshark users intuitively know how to use the display filter, how to start and stop a capture and how to read an IP address. However, the same individuals are not well-versed with reading that data and leveraging them. This book will help you embrace the benefits of Wireshark so that you can confidently capture and analyze packets. This book begins with an overview of traffic capture and highlights the benefits of traffic analysis. It compares Wireshark legacy with Wireshark NG and shows you how to install it on either a PC or a MAC. You will then dissect the Internet Suite IP, TCP, UDP, ARP and ICMP and move into deep packet analysis of common protocols such as FTP, DNS and DHCP. Finally, you will be able to work with packet captures including Wireshark's expert system and detect network latency issues. This book will also show to how to subset traffic, save, and export them along with sharing captures using Cloudshark. By the end of this book, you will be able to effectively troubleshoot your network and also detect probable network problems faster.
