Excerpt from The East African Force, 1915-1919: An Unofficial Record of Its Creation and Fighting Career; Together With Some Account of the Civil and Military Administrative Conditions in East Africa Before and During That Period
The record of the doings of the East African Force here set out is not taken from official documents, I must, therefore, crave indulgence for errors. The only written record I have referred to is a kind of diary, written up at irregular intervals during the time I spent on military duty in' East Africa, and giving my idea of the happenings there. By far the greater part of this is written entirely from memory. It gives the impressions that I received at the time, as one who was, to a certain extent, behind the scenes. I saw no actual fighting so have not tried to describe it. The opinions expressed, and the comments made, are entirely my own, and derived from what I saw and heard. Much of what I heard came to me unofficially.
