In this text the authors develop a propagator theory of Dirac particles, photons, and Klein-Gordon mesons and per- form a series of calculations designed to illustrate various useful techniques and concepts in electromagnetic, weak, and strong interactions. these include defining and implementing the renormalization program and evaluating effects of radia- tive corrections, such as the Lamb shift, in low-order calculations. The necessary background for the book is pro- vided by a course in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics at the general level of Schiff's text, QUANTUM MECHANICS.
James D Bjorken obtained his BSc from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1956 and his PhD in Physics from Stanford University in 1959. Since 1998 he has been Professor Emeritus at Stanford. In the period 1960-70 Prof Bjorken coauthored with Sidney Drell the pair of textbooks Relativistic Quantum Mechanics and Relativistic Quantum Fields; and, with Sheldon Glashow, presented arguments for the existence of a fourth kind of quark, suggesting its name, "charmed." In 1970-80 he contributed critical reviews and summaries of the development of the Standard Model. In the next decade Prof Bjorken built a hydrodynamic model of central particle production in ion-ion collisions; and, as Fermilab's Associate Director for Physics, served as liaison and ombudsman between experimental teams, laboratory management and program
